R.I.P. Prince Chunk, one of the world's largest cats and Southern New Jersey native :-(

This blog post is to remember, Prince Chunk, a cat that has made national headlines for his weight. Originally named "Captain Chunk" by Animal Control, Chunk was discovered in July of 2008 wandering around Voorhees, NJ. He was later adopted by the Camden County Animal Shelter and crowned Prince Chunk. When found, Chunk weighed in at an astonishing 44 lbs! Just 2 lbs short of the record for the world's largest cat!

Chunk made apperances nationally, appearing on television programs such as MSNBC, Good Morning America, Fox News, and Live With Regis and Kelly. After his discovery, it was found that Chunk, originally named Powder by his original owner Donna Oklatner, was abandoned by her. An elderly woman, Oklatner claimed she couldn't afford Chunk anymore after she lost her home to foreclosure.

Prince Chunk, at age 12, died in his sleep on November 21, 2010 from heart disease :-(.

It's so fascinating how this beautiful, and very large cat, was found right in our backyard of South NJ and how he appeared in news articles all over the nation! Since his discovery, the Guinness Book of World Records dropped their category for largest cat, as to prevent any animal abuse from occurring. How touching! Prince Chunk has certainly left his mark for the better.

R.I.P. Prince Chunk! You will never be forgotten and you will be greatly missed!
